Gen. James F. Amos, the newly appointed 35th Commandant of the Marine Corps, outlined a future for the service that puts emphasis on the ability to respond quickly to threats. “As we look ahead, we see a world of increasing instability and conflict, characterized by poverty, competition for resources, urbanization, overpopulation, and extremism,” Amos wrote in his Commandant’s Planning Guidance, issued Oct. 27. “America needs an expeditionary force in readiness that is prepared to respond to any crisis,” Amos wrote. In that regard, he said, the service will continue to deploy the best-trained and equipped Marines to Afghanistan, while focusing upon rebalancing resources and improving training and education, while not losing sight of the need to maintain the needs of families.
