The next Freedom-variant littoral combat ship will be called Indianapolis, Navy Secretary Ray Mabus announced Aug. 16. Like other vessels in its class, the new Indianapolis will have the flexibility to be converted for specific offshore-related counter-mine, anti-submarine, and surface warfare missions. The ship, LCS 17, is being built by Lockheed Martin in Marinette, Wis.
