Military and academic researchers working together under as the National Collegiate Athletic Association-Department of Defense Grand Alliance have come forward with several new tests to detect and treat traumatic brain injury (TBI).

Procedures include:

* A test to measure oculomotor dysfunction, the eye’s ability to locate and fix up on objects.
* A new device called a BrainScope, which analyzes the brain’s electrical activity for patients who are under consideration for CT scans.
* Another device, called an InfraScan, which uses near-infrared light to detect potential brain bleeding.

“This study validates DoD’s hallmark policy for concussion management in deployed settings, which beginning in 2010 removed soldiers who sustained a concussion from duty until symptom-free,” said Tracie Lattimore, director of the Army Traumatic Brain Injury Program.
