The Navy will name the next five Virginia-class attack submarines the Illinois (SSN 786), Washington (SSN 787), Colorado (SSN 788), Indiana (SSN 789), and South Dakota (SSN 790). Virginia-class subs offer enhanced stealth, surveillance, and special warfare capabilities. Once the vessels join the fleet, they will be able to perform anti-submarine and ant-ship warfare, mine delivery, minefield mapping, and special forces delivery and support missions. Each ship will displace 7,800 tons, be 377 feet long with a 34-foot beam, and can travel at 25 knots while submerged. Illinois, Colorado, and South Dakota will be built in Groton, Conn., by Electric Boat; Washington and Indiana will be built in Newport News, Va., at Huntington Ingalls Industries-Newport News Shipbuidling.
