Four of the five armed services showed a collective overall decrease in activated strength in early August, with only the Air Force posting a slight gain. As of Aug. 4, the Army National Guard and Reserve had 111,633 members on active duty; the Naval Reserve, 6,680; the Marine Corps Reserve, 8,336; and the Coast Guard Reserve, 691. The Air Force Reserve and Air Guard had 14,072 members on active duty. Total reserve-component strength was 141,412 on Aug. 4.
