U.S. military operations will focus at eliminating safe havens in Afghanistan and Pakistan for al-Qaida, President Obama said March 29. "We are going to make sure that they cannot attack U.S. citizens, U.S. soil, U.S. interests, and our allies’ interests around the world," Obama said on CBS’ News "Face the Nation," two days after he announced his plan to review Afghanistan-Pakistan policy. Speaking that same day on "Fox News Sunday," Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said roughly 68,000 U.S. troops would eventually be stationed in Afghanistan, aside a force of about 35,000 from other nations.
