The U.S. and Japan agreed to a new treaty that would reduce U.S. presence on the island prefecture, and allow for construction of a new Futenma Marine Corps Air Station further away from populous areas. The April 5 agreement calls for the return to Japan of roughly 2,500 acres of land. Japan, in turn, will provide $114.3 million to offset costs of relocating Marines to Guam from Okinawa. The new air station will be built on a landfill in the island’s Henoko Bay.
