The Senate confirmed Army Gen. David H. Petraeus as the next director of the Central Intelligence Agency on June 30. Petraeus will succeed Leon E. Panetta, who replaced Robert M. Gates as secretary of defense. Marine Corps Lt. Gen. John R. Allen is expected to assume command of NATO forces in Afghanistan from Petraeus on July 18. Petraeus will retire from the Army on Aug. 31 and assume his new job on Sept. 6.
