The Navy Reserve Forces Command in New Orleans has advised all reserve commands that reservists who have failed more than three Physical Fitness Assessments in the last four years may face administrative discharges. According to Vice Adm. John Cotton, chief of the Navy Reserve, as many as 20 percent of the reserve force could be subject to discharge, which would mean 12,500 of 62,690 reservists. Sailors who are improving and those whose loss would significantly reduce the readiness of the command may be authorized waivers. The discharge process, which parallels similar requirements for the active force, will begin this summer.
