The Defense Department has amended guidelines that govern service members’ political activities. The newest version of the directive, entitled "Political Activities by Members of the Armed Forces," includes clarification of rules under which retirees, reservists and former service members may run for political office. One change requires persons in uniform to obtain approval of their candidacy from their service secretaries. The directive also reinforces the long-standing ban on participation in political campaigns for active-duty service members. The rules are in place, DoD officials say, to ensure that service members can continue to do their jobs without political interference. They are available on www.defenselink.mil.
