The Defense Department will conduct an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of Army Maj. Gen. Harold J. Greene, who was killed during a shooting spree by an Afghan army soldier Aug. 5 in Kabul. Greene, 55, an engineer by profession, never had served a combat tour before deploying to Afghanistan to coordinate plans to bolster the country’s infrastructure. Present and former service members who served in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan have raised questions as to why security arrangements were insufficient. Greene apparently was not wearing body armor when he was killed during a visit with other high-ranking officers to a military training academy. Seventeen others were wounded in the attack. He was serving as Deputy for Acquisition and Systems Management, with the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army (Acquisition, Logistics and Technology), at the time.
