The Obama administration’s proposed $161 billion funding request for the Navy in fiscal year 2016 includes $44.4 billion for procurement. The Navy intends to reach a total of 304 ships by the end of fiscal year 2020 (Sept. 30, 2020). This year, the service plans to buy two Arleigh Burke destroyers, two Virginia-class submarines, three littoral combat ships, and the first of its next-generation T-AO(X) logistics fleet resupply ship. The plan also calls for refueling of the carrier George Washington, and the procurement of another dock landing ship. Another $17.9 billion would be devoted to research and development. The total package focuses on replenishment of the Navy-Marine Corps fighting team, which has seen its resources depleted during well more than a decade of continuous combat operations.
