Some service members who sign leases to live in privatized homes could no longer be covered automatically by federally sponsored renters insurance. The Defense Department has changed provisions for the basic allowance for housing (BAH), the Air Force has removed a requirement to provide no-cost housing insurance to renters in privatized housing projects. Coverage under current leases remains in effect. As a result, renters who want insurance coverage would have to pay for it out of pocket. Even though the automatic coverage will go away, Air Force housing officials still are strongly recommending that airmen who rent homes opt for the coverage.
