Still reeling from a scandal that saw referee Tim Donaghy plead guilty to taking money from gamblers, the National Basketball Association has hired retired Army Maj. Gen. Ronald L. Johnson to oversee the league’s referee operations. Johnson, who retired recently after a 32-year military career, will oversee the recruitment, training, development, and all other aspects of the NBA’s referee operations. In his last active-duty assignment, Johnson was deputy commander of the Corps of Engineers. In that capacity, he oversaw the rebuilding of Iraq from 2003 to 2004. He graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y., in 1976.
