On July 25, almost 1,200 Air Force captains and majors learned whether they would be allowed to remain on active duty in the Air Force. Senior officers informed 306 of them that they had been selected for release by the Reduction in Force (RIF) Board that met in June. Scheduled for release are 54 majors commissioned in 1995, 38 majors commissioned in 1996, 70 captains commissioned in 2000 and 144 captains commissioned in 2001. Specialty code 33S was hardest hit, with 94 communications/information officers selected for RIF. Other career fields included acquisition management, aircraft maintenance, finance, missile maintenance, personnel/manpower, public affairs and scientist. Most of those selected must leave active duty by Jan. 29. A recourse might be an appeal to the Air Force Board for Correction of Military Records. Air Force officials do not plan to publicly release the names of the 306 officers.
