The Navy plans to use more robotic unmanned underwater and surface vehicles to perform minesweeping operations now conducted by seals and sea lions, the San Diego Union-Tribune reported Nov. 30. Marine mammals will still handle port-security and object-retrieval tasks. Animals that now conduct anti-mine operations will be retrained, the Union-Tribute reported.
