Hospital Corpsman 1st Class Kevin D. Baskin received the Silver Star medal during a March 20 ceremony at Cap Lejeune, N.C., for heroism he displayed during combat operations in Afghanistan in April 2013. According to official records, Baskin exposed himself to enemy fire while aiding Marines who were wounded during a firefight. He was serving as a special amphibious reconnaissance corpsman with 3rd Marine Special Operations Battalion, Special Operations Regiment, U.S. Marine Corps Forces Special Operations Command at the time. Even though Baskin was shot in the back during the fight, he refused treatment and continued to help provide suppressive fire until each of his comrades was rescued. The Lansdale, Pa., native ultimately was responsible for saving the lives of four Marines.
