A civilian truck driver in Norfolk owes a debt of thanks to a quick-thinking sailor. Fire Controlman 3rd Class Tyler Swain was driving with his family in Norfolk, Va., when he witnessed another vehicle strike the truck while traveling at high speed. The truck flipped, pinning the driver. Tyler pulled over immediately, checked the condition of the truck driver, and then pulled the man to safety. He then stayed with the man until civilian police and first-responders could arrive on the scene and take over. “He came over and shook my hand, thanked me, asked me my name, and wanted to tell me he appreciated everything I did,” Swain said. The following day, Swain deployed with his shipmates on the guided missile destroyer Bulkeley on a seven-month cruise as part of the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group.
