Attorney General Eric Holder announced Sept. 4 that the Justice Department no longer would enforce the Defense and Veterans Affairs departments’ regulations that prohibit same-sex partners from sharing benefits. The move effectively allows same-sex partners to share those benefits as long as their relationships are recognized under state law. The decision jibed with the spirit of the Supreme Court’s June ruling that struck down the Defense of Marriage Act, Holder said in a letter to congressional leaders.
