The Senate Appropriations Committee approved $10.7 billion for military construction in 2014 — $66.5 million above 2013 levels – as part of the military construction and Veterans Affairs measure. For the active-duty military, the measure would provide $7.7 billion for facilities, barracks, schools, and medical-treatment facilities worldwide. The reserve component would receive $693.3 million for readiness centers, training facilities, and other necessary construction projects for National Guard and reserve units. Family housing construction and privatization would receive $1.5 billion. Other provisions address base realignment and closure, or BRAC ($451.4 million), NATO security (239.7 million), chemical demilitarization construction ($122.5 million), and energy conservation ($150 million).
