The Defense Department reaffirmed its commitment to rid the ranks of sexual harassment and assault, in a new policy guideline issued March 29. Under the policy, victims are entitled to improved safety. Victim-assistance services will be standardized throughout the ranks, prevention efforts will be enhanced, and victims will be encouraged to step forward and voice their complaints. Victims also can receive expedited transfers, to get them away from their attackers as quickly as possible. The Pentagon plans to improve victim response by setting up a crisis-intervention hotline, and establishing new training standards.
