Both the House and Senate approved companion bills that would prohibit the loss of state residency for voting and taxation purposes for anyone forced to move because their military spouse must leave the state on military orders. In essence, the two measures will amend the Servicemember’s Civil Relief Act to provide spouses with the same legal residency rights as their military husbands and wives. The bills are H.R. 1182, sponsored by Rep. John Carter, R-Texas, and S. 475, sponsored by Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C. The legislation now moves to the White House for President Obama’s signature.
