Service members who saw their military commitments involuntarily extended under Stop Loss between Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009, now have until Dec. 18 to apply for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay. The new deadline applies to eligible veterans and beneficiaries as well. Eligible persons will receive $500 for each full or partial month service in stop loss status. The deadline for application had been scheduled to end Dec. 3, but the services have granted the extension because many eligible recipients have left the service and are hard to locate. The Defense Department is combining efforts with veterans’ service organizations, news media outlets, and social networks to find persons who may have fallen through the cracks.
