The Navy announced that the next Virginia-class attack submarine will be named the USS John Warner, to honor the former Virginia senator who served as chairman of the Armed Services Committee. Warner, who retired Jan. 3, also was secretary of the Navy in the early 1970s. He served in the Korean War as a Marine Corps ground communications officer. The vessel will be built at Northrop Grumman Shipbuilding in Newport News, Va.
