The Navy commissioned the newest Virginia-class attack submarine April 18. With a typical formal ceremony out of the question due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the commissioning of the Vermont (SSN 792) took place administratively. The service intends to hold a public ceremony at a later date, when restrictions are lifted. Vermont is 377 feet long with a 34-foot beam, is capable of diving to 800 feet, and can move through the water at speeds in excess of 25 knots while submerged, Seapower magazine reported.
