The Navy plans to test-launch as many as 30 autonomous unmanned aerial vehicles in June, to determine how well they can interact with each other and perform a mission with as little human intervention as possible. The vehicles are known as LOCUSTs (Low Cost Unmanned Swarming Technology). Researchers envision them someday conducting intelligence, jamming and combat missions. The June tests will take place over land, Seapower Magazine reported May 17. In July, researchers hope to conduct a similar test over water.
