Tenure Rule Change Mulled for Navy IRRs

Navy Reserve officials are studying methods of capping the number of years in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) that are counted toward high-year tenure. Under high-year tenure, sailors must leave the Navy if they are not promoted into a paygade within a set number of years. This policy is inequitable for reservists because most who leave active duty during their first term are transferred to the IRR, where they are not eligible for promotion. If they want to join the Selected Reserve years later, they are trapped by the high-year tenure rule. No timeline has been announced for a change.
