The Center for a New American Security, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank, recently joined with Foreign Policy magazine to canvas 3,437 Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine Corps officers in an unscientific online poll conducted Dec. 7-Jan. 15. More information is available on the center’s Web site at http://www.cnas.org/. Key findings include:
* While 56 percent of all respondents did not think the military was "broken," 88 percent believe that the war in Iraq has stretched it dangerously thin;
* Respondents expressed concern about the overall health of the Army. On a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 meaning "no concern" and 10 meaning "extremely concerned," the Army garnered a 7.5;
* Support for the surge in Iraq is high, with 88 percent of all respondents saying it has had a positive effect;
* Sixty-four percent of all respondents said that morale in the armed forces was high.
