The Navy formally established the U.S. 2ndFleet during an Aug. 24 ceremony at Norfolk Naval Station, Va., with Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson placing Vice Adm. Andrew “Woody” Lewis in command.
Richardson justified the re-establishment of the 2ndFleet, saying it would play a key security role.
“Second fleet will enhance our capacity to maneuver and fight in the Atlantic, and as a result, to help maintain America’s maritime security, influence and prosperity of our nation,” Richardson said.
The 2ndFleet will operate in the East Coast and North Atlantic, under the operational control of U.S. Fleet Forces Command.
