The U.S. 4th Fleet, dormant since it was disestablished in 1950, will sail again, Adm. Gary Roughead, the Chief of Naval Operations, announced April 24. The 4th Fleet will be home ported at Mayport Naval Station, Fla., and serve under U.S. Southern Command, focusing on operations in the Caribbean, as well as South and Central America. "Reconstituting the 4th Fleet recognizes the immense importance of maritime security in the southern part of the Western Hemisphere, and sends a strong signal to all the civil and military maritime services in Central and Latin America," said Roughead.
