The U.S. Naval Academy and the Naval Academy Preparatory School are encouraging qualified Marines to apply for admission to the class of 2017. Selectees would enter the academy next June. Successful applicants cannot be married, pregnant, or hold any parental obligations. While there are no minimum test scores, ideal candidates would have Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) scores higher than 550 in math and 500 in critical reading, or American College Testing (ACT) scores of 24 in math and 22 in English. They should possess strong academic backgrounds in geometry, algebra, and trigonometry, four years of English, and one year of chemistry. Backgrounds in physics, calculus, history, and a foreign language also are helpful. Other requirements are spelled out in MARADMIN 587/12, available online at www.marines.mil. Preliminary applications can be submitted online to www.usna.edu/admissions. Applications for the Newport, R.I.-based prep school, for appointment to the Naval Academy the following year, must be submitted by Jan. 31. All applications and recommendations from commanders are due by March 1.
