Veterans who use GI Bill benefits to cover education expenses in states that have not yet complied with new federal laws will not see those benefits lapse – for the time being. The Department of Veterans Affairs has waived a legal requirement that states offer veterans tuition at in-state levels. The waiver is in effect through December. The move would give states time to bring their laws into compliance with the 2014 Veterans Access, Choice, and Accountability Act. Also, students attending schools in those non-compliant states would be able to use their Montgomery or Post 9/11 GI Bill benefits to offset their education costs. VA still wants schools in those states to submit their plans to comply with the 2014 law. Those plans are due at the end of June.
