Only animals that have been trained to perform tasks for disabled persons will be allowed on the premises of VA facilities, the agency announced Aug. 17. Exceptions only will be extended for the purposes of animal-assisted therapy and law enforcement. All animals would be subject to guidelines that restrict locations and times where they can be present on VA properties. VA implemented the changes to help ensure patient safety and maintain infection-control standards.
