The Department of Veterans Affairs is offering $3,000 assistance checks to service members who are waiting for reimbursement of education expenses under the Post 9/11 G.I. Bill. The VA plans to begin distributing the money Oct. 2. On that date, students who qualify for the benefit checks can visit the closest VA regional benefit office with photo identification, a course schedule, and an eligibility certificate, to request the advance payment for their housing and book allowances. The VA also plans to place staffers at schools with large veteran populations. While more than 27,500 student veterans have already received their new G.I. Bill benefits, another 25,000 are still waiting for their claims to be processed.
