More than 24,000 veterans whose traumatic-brain injury (TBI) claims initially were rejected will get another chance to make their cases. Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Robert McDonald ordered the department to provide “equitable relief” to those veterans whose TBI screenings and subsequent rejections took place between 2007 and 2015. The new screening will be reviewed by either a psychiatrist, a physiatrist, a neurosurgeon, or a neurologist – a process that did not take place initially. “Providing support for veterans suffering from a TBI is a priority and a privilege, and we must make certain they receive a just and fair rating for their disabilities,” McDonald said June 1.
