The Veterans Guaranteed Bonus Act, introduced by Rep. Jason Altmire, D-Penn., would require the Department of Defense to pay re-enlistment bonuses to service members who cannot complete their enlistment due to combat injuries. Currently the bonuses are paid in installments that are terminated if the member’s military service stops. Thus, a member who is injured in combat after re-enlisting would receive the initial payment, which is usually half of the bonus, but would not receive any further annual installments after being separated from service.
