Veterans groups, with AMVETS leading the way, are petitioning Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric K. Shinseki to close a legal loophole that allows some VA facilities to bar veterans’ service dogs from their premises. In a letter to Shinseki signed by AMVETS Executive Director Jim King, the organization cited two instances in which members who depended upon their service dogs to make VA appointments were denied access to care. AMVETS said that attempts to resolve the issue with VA officials have failed, prompting King to ask Shinseki to intervene.
