Following a directive by President Obama, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates has asked Adm. Patrick M. Walsh, the vice chief of naval operations, to assess activities at the detention center at Guantanamo Bay Naval Station, Cuba, the Pentagon announced Feb. 3. The facility houses persons suspected of hostile activity against the U.S. since the war on terror began in September 2001. Shortly after taking office, Obama ordered a 120-day cessation of detainees’ cases to military tribunals, in the wake of findings that some had possibly been tortured. Obama also ordered that the Guantanamo facility be closed within a year.
