The number of service members hospitalized for mental health disorders increased 65 percent between 2001 and 2011, according to an Aug. 5 report by the Congressional Research Service. A total of 936,283 present and former service members were diagnosed while on active duty with at least one form of mental disorder during that time, the report stated. Nearly 49 percent of those patients were diagnosed with more than one malady. The patients suffered from post-traumatic stress, adjustment, anxiety or alcohol and substance abuse disorders. The rates of all reported mental health disorders rose as well. Between 2000 and 2011, PTSD diagnoses rose from 1,110 diagnoses to 1,110 diagnoses per 100,000 person-years – an increase of 650 percent.
