Media reports last week exposed a plethora of deplorable failures of administration, lodging and medical treatment of wounded Army and Marine warriors at an annex of Walter Reed Medical Center. At press time the maltreatments of wounded service members appear to be ending. The following examples exemplify the fallout.

Sen. Bill Nelson, D-Fla: “… This really is despicable and unacceptable. It’s a case of failed leadership. So I’m asking the defense secretary to hold someone accountable immediately; and, to make sure all of our veterans are cared for in clean and sanitary conditions.”

Army Vice Chief of Staff General Richard Cody: “I’ll take responsibility. I’m the Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. I’ll take responsibility for this and I’ll make sure it’s fixed.”

The Military Officers Association of America: “When 1 percent of the population is bearing 100 percent of the nation’s wartime sacrifice, the other 99 percent should and must bear a tremendous sense of responsibility and guilt when the basic needs of the wounded few are neglected.”
