Military research laboratories are receiving an additional $1.76 million in funding, to expand efforts to combat the Zika virus. Medical teams from each service will take part in 10 projects in 18 countries. The mosquito-borne virus is linked to serious birth defects of babies born to mothers who were bitten while pregnant. The military teams will collect blood serum samples for the Department of Defense Serum Repository, for future use in diagnostic efforts.
