The Department of Defense is preparing for an exodus of
career senior executive service employees – 67 percent of
whom will be able to retire in 2008 – over the next decade,
the department’s under secretary for defense for personnel
and readiness told a Senate subcommittee recently.
David S. C.. Chu told the Senate armed services personnel
subcommittee that the department’s human capital strategic
plan calls for identifying and closing leadership competency
gaps and ensuring the continuity of diverse and capable leaders.
DoD is also updating its civilian HR policies for the
deployment of civilians in support of military operations,
Chu said.
He said the department launched a campaign to reach out to
injured and disabled veterans that includes a new website —
www.dodvets.com — to serve as a resource of employment
information for veterans, their spouses, and managers, and
that helped hire 54 service members at various DoD and federal
agencies.
