By: FEDweek StaffThe GAO has issued a guide for agencies on agile software development, a more iterative process that it said could “reduce the risks of funding a program that fails or produces outdated technology.”
GAO noted that the Federal Information Technology Acquisition Reform Act calls for larger agencies to certify that certain IT investments are adequately implementing incremental development. As a result, some agencies have transitioned to agile development, which it described as “an approach to software development in which software is developed incrementally and is continuously evaluated for functionality, quality, and customer satisfaction.”
“The Agile Assessment Guide discusses best practices that can be used across the federal government for Agile adoption, execution, and program monitoring and control. Use of these best practices should enable government programs to better transition to and manage their Agile programs,” it says.
Primary audiences, it says, include auditors who assess the adoption and implementation of agile methods; organizations and programs that have established policies and protocols for agile adoption and execution; and, organizations and programs considering adopting such practices.
Agile has the potential to bring faster delivery of functional software due to an emphasis on incremental delivery. This methodology also promotes team collaboration and customer satisfaction, with regular feedback loops ensuring that the final product aligns with customer requirements. Agile is adaptive in nature, accommodating changes in requirements even in the late stages of the project, enhancing the overall quality of the software product.
