The General Services Administration has announced that Jim Williams, currently the director of the Department of Homeland Security’s visitor and immigrant tracking program, US-VISIT, will take over as the commissioner of the federal acquisition service, replacing acting commissioner Marty Wagner, who will return to GSA’s government-wide policy office.
Lurita Doan, recently confirmed to lead the agency, credited Williams in a statement with “an incredible toolkit of entrepreneurial skills,” and said he has “extensive experience managing large, high visibility contracts and in building a superior team.”
Doan, new to government service and a Virginia businesswoman prior to joining GSA, has held DHS contracts in recent years through her former company.
“I am confident that we can continue to attract and develop top talent as we remake GSA into a more responsive purchasing agency, utilizing best practices in government contracting,” Doan added.
Williams has an established federal career. Prior to DHS, Williams served as deputy associate commissioner for program management at the IRS, overseeing modernization application projects, and also served as the agency’s deputy assistant commissioner for procurement as well as its procurement director.
Before that, Williams served as director of the local telecommunications division at GSA.
