The Department of Justice has established a procurement
fraud initiative designed to detect and prevent fraud
in national security contracts and other government
programs, brought on by increased national security
and defense contracting.
Justice said the group would include representatives
from the Federal Bureau of Investigation, and the
departments of Defense, Homeland Security, State,
Transportation, and the National Reconnaissance Office
— and would share information among participating
agencies and help develop new anti-fraud strategies.
The announcement follows the sentencing of Boeing CEO
Micheal M. Sears to four months of incarceration,
community service and a fine for his role in the soured
$20 billion Air Force tanker lease deal. Sears had
negotiated with Darleen Druyun, principal deputy
assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition
and management simultaneously about the tanker deal,
and at the same time her future employment at Boeing.
