OPM has announced that someone with private sector employer credentials was able to access the USAJOBS resume database using "malicious software" and got away with contact information of the sort that has been used by "phishing" emailers.
Phishing is a sort of confidence trick dressed up in email that attempts to get the recipient to volunteer sensitive information.
Monster Worldwide, the company that provides the technology for the site, said no Social Security numbers have been compromised, and that 146,000 subscribers to USAJOBS.gov – out of two million – were affected.
OPM said the subscriber information could be used to target populations to request additional information, and added that OPM and Monster would never do so on their own initiative.
Users who do receive such e-mail should report it immediately to Mayday@fedjobs.gov.
