Acting Defense Secretary Mark T. Esper reiterated to all Defense Department active-duty members and civilian workers that the Trump administration remains committed to building a more lethal force, strengthening existent alliances and attracting new ones, and reshaping the department for “greater performance and affordability.”

Esper assumed his temporary position earlier this month, when acting Defense Secretary Patrick M. Shanahan withdrew his name from consideration for the job amid reports of issues relating to his past personal conduct. Esper was serving as Secretary of the Army when Trump asked him to take the top civilian Pentagon job on June 21.
