One of the ways that the CryptoLocker virus was spread was through “malvertising” whereby ads served on websites – often media websites – contain links to websites that have malware designed to exploit vulnerabilities in Java (which should always be turned off by default) and Flash, for example, according to a recent security report from Cisco.

The report – Cisco 2014 Midyear Security Report – examines threat intelligence and cybersecurity trends for the first half of this year. It ranks malvertising as a potential significant problem for the ad-driven basis for much of the web, and by extension the economy.
