GSA’s acting CIO, Sonny Hashmi is a finalist for the Partnership for Public Service’s Service to America Medal in the category of management excellence for leading GSA’s cloud initiative.

According to PPS, by effectively leading GSA’s “drive to the cloud” initiative, Hashmi helped realize plans to allow employees to work from any device anywhere at anytime. The multi year roll out improved employee effectiveness, reduced costs and created a model for other agencies to follow.

Hashmi “understood the challenges and the technology and was instrumental in pushing the ambitious effort forward,”said PPS.It added that since moving GSA employees from legacy apps to Google Apps, GSA has added a cloud-based platform of collaboration and document management tools, and that under Hashmi’s guidance, the agency has consolidated over 1,700 legacy applications into about 100 cloud-based applications.

GSA secretary Dan TangherlinicreditedHashmiwith becoming “the government-wide leader in convincing the federal government to move to the cloud.”
