Contractors are feeling the heat of the government shutdown, as well. After saying it wouldn’t last week, Lockheed Martin has announced that it furloughed about 3,000 of its employees, and that it expects there are more to come.
The defense contractor, which has net sales of $47.2 billion in 2012, said impacted employees range from those who work at facilities that are closed to those that must stop work because the nature of the work requires federal inspections to take place.
For now, Lockheed has directed affected employees to use their vacation time so they can continue to receive pay and benefits.
